Diminishing remnant bushland means suburban gardens are now an essential part of the territory inhabited by koalas and other native animals.

Koalas can climb most fences and often must cross yards to reach other nearby eucalypts, so even if you have no food trees on your property, it does not mean koalas won't be passing through. Therefore it's important to take steps to ensure wildlife and your pets can live in harmony.

Try the following measures:

• Plant more trees at closer intervals as a daytime refuge for koalas.
• Consider landscaping your garden to be more environmentally friendly to native wildlife.
• Consider using an electrical alarm system for security instead of a guard dog.
• Ensure pets (dogs and cats) are fully restrained at night when many native animals move about to feed. Consider tethering your dog close to the house or in its kennel or even enclosing it in the garage.

Some dog owners take a bit of convincing to realise their beloved pet could kill a koala. Do you?

“But my dog wouldn't hurt anything”

Has your dog ever seen a koala? Most dogs feel threatened by the sight of a koala in their yard and will naturally attack.

“But my dog would only play with it”

Even a quick 'playful' bite is enough to kill a koala. Their skin is very pliable and internal organs are easily punctured.

“But we bought this property to give our dog room to run”

Your dog has all day to play – surely we could share. By restraining dogs at night, when koalas mainly move, many attacks would be avoided.

“It's cruel to chain a dog”

Dogs soon enjoy a routine of being 'tucked in' every night ... and so will your neighbours, who won't be disturbed by barking.

“I want my dog loose on my property for protection”

Unrestrained dogs can easily be baited or distracted. Your dog is much safer near the house where it can guard you best.

REMEMBER: Koalas are not living in your territory, you are living in theirs!
