Koala habitat is being lost to development at an alarming rate and food sources are diminishing as a result. Deaths caused by motor vehicles and attacks by domestic dogs are also heavily impacting on the koala population.
There is a common misconception that you can relocate a koala whose habitat is being destroyed and once it's out of harm's way, it will be fine. If only it were that easy!
Attempting to un-tree a koala involves a risk to both rescuer and koala, especially if it's a healthy adult koala ... and relocating it will probably kill it!
Recent research has shown that relocating koalas does not work. Nine out of 10 will probably die.
On top of that, we are not permitted to move a healthy koala anyway!
It's not only koalas that are suffering either. Other species of our native wildlife are also being threatened on a daily basis.
IKPS also regularly helps in the rescue and rehabilitation of these animals too:
m macropods (kangaroos and wallabies);
m possums and gliders;
m flying foxes and bats;
m birds.
